The economic situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (1960~2020)

This chart shows the economic situation after Congo gained independence. The Congo exerted to become decolonization and, finally, afterward, Congo finished the confrontation against Belgian, they could be an independent country on June 30, 1960. They elected Joseph Kasavubu as a president, and they had been improved financially and politically by the United States, which supported and secured them. However, due to


the rebel Army, which received support from the Soviet Union, Chinese Communists, and neighbor African nations, the Congo focused on insurgency to repress them. Although the suppression succeeded in 5 years, their financial situation became worse than the beginning of independence. (U.S. Department of State). About 100,000 people died during this suppression. People call this “the Congo Crisis” (“Boundless World History”).


With support from the United States, the Congo was dramatically improved and the economic state was skyrocketed until 1977. However, the Congo was in crisis after the increase. The Congolese National Liberation Front(FLNC), which was opposite Mobutu, a president of Congo from 1965 to 1997, started a riot by invading Shaba. While two


major invasions into Shaba went on, the financial situation was stood in a similar plight of the beginning of the independence. Many poor and unemployed people were blamed for Mobutu (“Mobutu's Regime”).

Afterward the many crises, Mobutu had fled but eventually died, and Laurant Kabila served as a third president of Congo (“Laurent Kabila”).
